Summary: you get what you pay for. In this case it's a passable cup of coffee but a clear notch below Keurig, Nespresso and Senseo standards - even when using a Senseo pod.
Engineers drink a lot of coffee. Within 5 minutes walking there are 3 drip coffee makers, plus a Senseo, A Keurig and a Nespresso machine. Me, I use a stove top Moka-Express to make a thermos full of Café Americano (Espresso diluted with hot water) which I nurse throughout the day.
This machine uses Senseo pods but it's important to understand that instead of forcing (near) boiling water through the pod under pressure as the to extract the coffee as the Nespresso and regular Senseo machines do, this machine just drips boiling water over the pod. The Keurig machines don't use pressure but are still more efficient. The result is that it takes a lot longer (About 4 minutes) to get your coffee, and it's definitely not as good. The flavor is closer to your standard drip coffee, weaker, and you get no crema (froth). You also use more coffee to get the same strength.
With a single package of medium roast, 12 oz of water was far too much. Perhaps 8 oz gave a decent strength, perhaps comparable to what you get from McDonalds. To reach Starbucks strength you need to use two pods and perhaps no more than 8 oz of water.
The machine itself is quite small and looks attractive (clean lines in black and stainless). Feels decently solid given price and amount of plastic. Other than a bloom on the plastic which wiped off the quality is decent. One nice touch is that excess cord stows in the back by forcing it through a hole.
One plus is that the design of the machine looks like it can easily be adapted to serve as a single serving drip machine, which would allow me to use my own blends, as well as saving the cost of the pods ($0.20 - $0.40 each)
Plus: Much cheaper than standard pump action pod machine. Much smaller than standard pump action pod machine
Minus: Coffee flavor suffers. Pods are limited in variety and are not inexpensive.
